Story time! About 10 years before I was born, my parents adopted one of my sisters as a newborn from Korea. One of their neighbors in our rural--and mostly, if not all, white town--asked, in all sincerity, "Will she speak Korean or English when she grows up?"

This incident has become a bit of family lore over the years. There are so many times I think about this lady and just have to shake my head. But do you know what? It was the 70s, long before people shared their stories on social media. She had probably met a very small number of people whose first language was not English and international adoption was still pretty new in this country. So, without yelling or belittling, my mom took the opportunity to educate. This woman had to start somewhere and I can only hope she learned and grew from this event.

Don't we all have to start somewhere? I've been thinking about this a lot. Couldn't we be more patient with someone who is on a faith journey or is going through something we've never experienced? Could we give someone more time to understand the difficulties someone with disabilities faces in life, to learn more about the complicated history of race in our country, etc. and allow empathy to grow more in them and ourselves?

I'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume we're all trying our best. It's so hard right now. It's SO, so easy to jump to the conclusion that some people just won't be told anything different than what they have experienced. Sadly, it's probably true for some people, but deep down, I really do believe all people can grow. I wonder what it would be like if, when we "know better" than someone else because of our own knowledge, experiences, and efforts, we resist the urge to yell and belittle and teach instead.

Did someone give you grace and patience as you learned something new, as you formed new behaviors, did the hard work to adjust your perspective? I know people have shown me that and it makes me want to be that person for someone else.
