The reason behind “Gracious – Quotes from Women of Faith”: I’ve been offering free printables for a number of years. As I’ve designed quote art after each general conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints1, I’ve often felt the desire to share the voices of our women leaders. It would take me a very long time to write out the why behind this desire, but in short let me tell you this: I’m a lifelong member of the Church and have faced times in my life where I wasn’t sure where my place was there in its walls. As I focused more on my relationship with the Savior, as I repeatedly was called to serve in the Relief Society, as I raised a daughter, and so much more, I continued to feel a special spirit as I listened to the women leaders. They buoy me up when I’m pushed down by the weight of the world. They point me to the Savior and encourage me to continue serving.
I don’t remember when exactly I felt like I should create a collection of quotes from the women leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ, but I know it’s something I couldn’t keep out of my mind for long. I believe there are many of you out there who feel the same desire to share their words and find relief in them. When I looked over my collection of quote art from years of creating, I realized I already had close to 100 quotes ready to share. So you’ll recognize some of these, but don’t worry! I’ll continue to design new printables for you. Please share them how you would like to! Use them to serve and love. Share online. Send a text to a friend. Print and share with a neighbor. Print and display in your home as a reminder to love the Lord and serve those around you.
The story of the name: I struggled to know what to call this little pet project of mine. I enlisted the help of my family and a dear friend, but nothing was hitting me. I decided to look through the scriptures for the women who have stood out to me over the years. I came across the story of Tabitha (Dorcas) who I remember loving! Her story is shared in Acts. If you don’t know her story, she was member of the early Church of Jesus Christ. She was well known for her service. She gave of herself and her talents, sewing clothing for those in need. Her desire to serve and love pointed people to the Savior. She died and was surrounded by people she had served. Later, she was raised from the dead by the apostle Peter. Her story and testimony again pointed people to the Savior.
As I studied more about Tabitha, I ran across a beautiful article about ministering in the July 2023 Liahona. This passage stuck out to me: “Like the Savior, [Tabitha] wore out her life serving. She had skills and talents that she used to make a difference.” This is something I’ve tried to do with my life and something we’ve tried to teach our children. We’ve all been given unique gifts and talents. When we build up those talents, we can choose to serve the Lord by serving our brothers and sisters as we use them in a way only we can.
So here’s where you may have to follow me closely, but “Gracious” is a nod to Tabitha and her story. The name Tabitha means “Gracious” and my name, Joan, means “God is Gracious.” I loved that connection and I love that when we put in the effort, God will make up the difference.
